Love Poetry
Love poetry is the art of writing a poem that conveys a message of love, a feeling that the author has that can't be expressed with regular speak.
Love Poetry Sample:
LOVE is enough: though the World be a-waning,
And the woods have no voice but the voice of complaining,
Though the sky be too dark for dim eyes to discover
The gold-cups and daisies fair blooming thereunder,
Though the hills be held shadows, and the sea a dark wonder,
And this day draw a veil over all deeds pass'd over,
Yet their hands shall not tremble, their feet shall not falter;
The void shall not weary, the fear shall not alter
These lips and these eyes of the loved and the lover.
--William Morris (1834-1896)
One of the most famous love poems was written by the poet e.e. cummings. It has been featured in many books and has been used as inspiration for other writers.
i carry your heart with me
by e. e. cummings
i carry your heart with me (i carry it in
my heart) i am never without it (anywhere
i go you go, my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing, my darling)
i fear
no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) i want
no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)

How Do I Love Thee?
by Elizabeth Barrett Browning
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday's
Most quiet need, by sun and candlelight.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints, I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life! and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.
A Red, Red Rose
By Robert Burns
O my Luve's like a red, red rose
That's newly sprung in June;
O my Luve's like the melodie
That's sweetly played in tune.
As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry:
Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi' the sun;
I will luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands o' life shall run.
And fare thee weel, my only Luve,
And fare thee weel awhile!
And I will come again, my Luve,
Tho' it ware ten thousand mile.

Over the ages, the famous love poets such as Shakespeare and Dante have been successful in exploring the various spectrum of emotions related to love.
Some, actually most of their poems aren't all mushy and positive...but is love always so?
Love poems aren't only about the happy, positive feelings of a person in love...
Many of the most famous love poems are
about the torments and passionate desires of love unfullfilled!
Composing a love poem can be a time consuming work, which requires concentration similar to a metal smith who shapes and refines his or her instruments.
With pen in hand, the wordsmith crafts his or her poem, and revises it to the best possible combination of words to express thoughts or emotions.
A good way to find words to express feelings is simply to use a thesaurus.
(see below)
You'll likely find dozens of words to use, and then sift them down to the choice few to organize so that they best express your message.
Personally, I'm a fan of the concise, almost haiku-like love poem.
Short poems ranging from haiku to 1/2 page are a good place to start.
Make every word count!
Try not to bore your reader for even 1 second!
These types of short poems can convey powerful images and also have one additional benefit...
If you're poem isn't all that good, then at least you won't bore the heck out of the reader with pages and pages of amateur verse!
Be considerate to your audience...that's my philosophy.
Once you're well read and well versed, the Shakespearian/epic type is viable too...But these long poems may not be best suited for amateurs.
However, don't let anyone B.S. you into thinking that you must study and study and take their class before you can write a love poem...
Remember: There's only one major rule to writing love poetry:
There are no rules!
If it expresses the thought elegantly, it's a success!
