Acrostic PoetryAcrostic The acrostic uses letters of a particular word or name as the first letters of each of its lines. Everything else -- meter, rhyme scheme, subject –is completely up to the poet. Acrostics can be combined with a strict form poetry like the tyburn, or used in shape poetry. Generally, if you want a rhyme scheme, make sure your base word has the number of letters you need, whether it be a specific number for a form poem or just an even number of letters for a few couplets. One simple way to make an acrostic is to use the letters of your name (or a pet’s name or a friend’s name) to create a poem about yourself (or your pet or your friend). Acrostic poems could be a great creative idea for a gift card for a friend or family member. |
