Meter

1. Meter – Meter is the rhythm or pattern of syllables in the lines of a poem.

English meter is founded on the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables.

The smallest units of poetic meter, like rhyme, vary in different poetic traditions.

Different types of poetry are defined by the arrangements of syllables in patterns repeated throughout the poem.  These repeated patterns are called 'feet' within a line.

English meter is founded on the pattern of stressed (emphasized or important)and unstressed syllables.

For example:

My only love sprung from my only hate!
Too early seen unknown, and known too late!
Prodigious birth of love it is to me,
That I must love a loathèd enemy.

-- William Shakespeare,
from Romeo and Juliet
