Quatrain Poetry

Quatrain
As the name indicates, a quatrain is a group of four lines.  They are usually stanzas of a longer poem, and they can be any meter (thus any number of syllables per line).  There are also variations on the rhyme scheme:  abab or alternating rhyme; abba or envelope rhyme; aaba, bbcb, ccdc (chain rhyme); and aabb (pairs of couplets) are some possibilities.

Tyger! Tyger! burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

--William Blake, from The Tyger

This is a common style of poetry used by many poets from all cultures over the ages, and is as old as rhyme itself.
